EDITORIAL: Students showing adults the power of giving

LEEDS — Over the past few weeks, we have seen people across our nation reaching into their wallets to help the devastated nation of Haiti following an earthquake that has killed well over 100,000 and displaced countless others. It is very difficult to comprehend the sorrow being felt by the people of that country, especially for young children. Still, it has been an inspiration to witness students here at home reaching out to help those so far away.

Through their efforts, students are learning that by working together they can make a big difference. At Leeds Elementary School, students raised $647 simply by donating at least $1. For that donation, students were rewarded by getting to wear their favorite hat. Then, Leeds Middle School chipped in an additional $350 by selling tickets to a basketball game pitting coaches and teachers against the LMS basketball team. Together, these schools were only $3 short of raising $1,000. These students deserve a big round of applause for their efforts!

Adults should take a close look at what these students have achieved. It teaches us all that we can make a difference and that we can accomplish big things by taking small steps together. By working from the same page and getting organized, we can achieve our goals, whether they be helping those in need, building a new public library, helping cure diseases through Relay for Life and March of Dimes, helping students through the Leeds Education Foundation, or anything else.

Let’s follow our students’ lead. It’s not always easy, but the rewards of working together and getting involved are countless.
