LEEDS —
While describing last week’s passing camp at Samford University “as far away from football as you can get,” Leeds coach Keith Etheredge said he was pleased with how the Green Wave performed.
“We competed well. Our kids did a good job. Real good,” Etheredge said.
The Green Wave played six games at the seven-on-seven camp, ending the day with a 2-3-1 finish.
“Wins and losses at passing camp don’t really matter much,” Etheredge said. “The biggest thing is that everyone had fun and enjoyed it.”
Leeds played against such teams as Pell City, Wetumpka, and Hoover.
“Some of the bigger teams were running seven guys on and seven guys off. We were playing seven guys on offense and often the same seven on defense. At the end of the day, the kids were drained,” he said.
Etheredge said that starting quarterback Shane McGinnis and backup Tank Smith both had good days at the camp. McGinnis threw 15 touchdowns in the six games, and Smith passed for three, including a 35-yard score on his first throw.
The upcoming freshman is expected to offer some relief to senior McGinnis this season, according to Etheredge.
“He’s done such a good job, it’s going to be hard to keep him out of there,” he said.
A run-oriented offense that rushed for more than 4,000 yards in each of the past two seasons, “we can throw the ball,” the coach said. “We just don’t do it 20 or 30 times a game.”
Still, the passing camp and another scheduled next week at Springville aren’t without benefits, he added. “It’s kind of like basketball on grass, and it builds team unity. You want to win, but you don’t stake everything on it. The year we won the state championship, we didn’t win a game at passing camp.”
