Saints Narrowly Beaten in the First Round of the Springville Christmas Classi
The Pell City Panthers advanced to play Clay-Chalkville in round two of the 2009 Trinity Medical Center/Springville Christmas Classic Tournament after defeating St. Clair County on Monday, 56-53.
The Saints Daniel Fortner buried a three at the end of the first quarter, cutting the Panthers’ lead to 14-12. In the second quarter, the Saints’ press caused problems for Pell City and forced two timeouts. At the half the Panthers led 25-20.
The third quarter was well played by both teams. Pell City’s Andrew Cagle knocked down a three at the buzzer after coming off several screens on a well-executed set play out of a timeout. Pell City led 43-40 heading into the final quarter.
The Panthers opened up a seven-point lead, forcing a Saints timeout quickly into the fourth quarter. The Panthers held the ball and drained the clock, leading 49-43 with 2:31 in the game.
Another three from Fortner made the score 51-46, Pell City, with 1:30 left. The Saints’ Darius Crump nailed a deep three with under a minute remaining and brought the Saints within one. A Fortner free throw then tied the game at 53-53.
The game changing play came off a Pell City steal and layup by Javonta Collins, putting the Panthers up 55-53. After a missed shot from the Saints and a foul off the rebound, Cagle stepped to the line and made one of two giving the Panthers their 56-53 win.
