LEEDS —
Leeds Green Wave senior defensive back Jonathan Rose made his choice of where to play college football official on Sunday night.
In a televised interview, Rose announced he would spend his fall Saturdays playing football on the plains for the Auburn Tigers.
Rose said playing college football at Auburn was the opportunity of a lifetime and that the school was where he wanted to spend his college years with the prospect of playing in front of nationwide television audiences.
The upcoming senior earned the scholarship after three seasons of playing for the Green Wave.
Rose is the son of Charles and Felecia Rose who both attended Leeds in the 1990s.
His father may have had some influence in Rose’s decision to attend Auburn. Charles Rose played football for the Green Wave under coach Bobby Fairly and went on to Auburn to play for Bobby Bowden and the Tigers from 1992 through 1996.
“I grew up around Auburn and there was always something in the back of my mind that said I wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps,” Rose said.
Rose had scholarship offers from Alabama, Georgia, Missisippi State, Tennessee, and Florida State.
The standout said he wanted to go ahead and announce his choice of colleges so that he could concentrate on his senior season at LHS.
“I wanted to get this process done now so that me and my teammates can concentrate on trying to win another state championship this year,” he said.
Rivals, a nationally-recognized organization that ranks college prospects, has Rose listed as the third best high school corner in the nation.
Rose finished last season with 48 tackles and five interceptions.
The Green Wave began practicing for the upcoming season on Monday.
