LHS grad nears end of stand-out collegiate career

TIGERVILLE, S.C. — A former member of the Leeds High School athletic program will soon be completing a college career full of highlights, both on and off the court.

Whitney Leigh Smith graduates as valedictorian of Leeds High School’s Class of 2006. Upon graduation, she signed an athletic and academic scholarship to North Greenville University in Tigerville, South Carolina.

Smith’s scholarship was for basketball, but the versatile athlete was also a walk-on on the soccer team her sophomore and junior years, helping that team to the regional tournament.

On the hardcourt, Smith became a starter about mid-way through her sophomore season. She also served as chaplain of the team.

Dedicated to her academic pursuits, Smith graduated Suma Cum Laude in three years with a degree in accounting and maintained a 3.9 grade point average. She was also a recipient of the Who’s Who Among America’s College Students Award.

Upon graduating, Smith decided to finish her final season of eligibility as a basketball player and pursue a master’s degree in business.

As a senior for the Lady Crusaders, Smith set a career high for scoring 35 points in one game. She ranked ninth in NCAA Division II in three-point percentage shooting 44.9 percent from behing the arch.

At 5 feet, 8 inches, Smith was a versatile player for the Lady Crusaders, playing both the guard and post positions. She averaged 11.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game her senior season. She was named North Greenville’s Female Student Athlete of the Month in December 2009.

Smith and her Lady Crusaders teammates traveled to the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association tournament in Indiana where the team placed fourth in the nation.

Individual honors also came to Smith as an Academic All-American, Honorable Mention All-American and Scholar Athlete.

At North Greenville University’s spring athletic banquet, Smith received the Christian Leadership Award adn Most Outstanding Player.

Smith will graduate in August with a master’s degree in business.
