Green Wave cruises past Indian Springs

Buckner leads way with 23 points

LEEDS — Domination in the second half led to an easy Green Wave Victory over Indian Springs, 72-44.

Leeds led by only eight at the half but turned the defensive intensity way up and pressured Indian Springs into multiple turnovers in the final quarters.

The Green Wave full court press was very effective, swarming the inbounds passes and did not allow Indian Springs to gather any momentum up court.

The top scorers for Leeds were Mark Buckner with 23 points,

Jermaine Smith with 16 and Brandon Woods with 13.

Leeds will play Shades Valley tonight in a makeup game that was cancelled last week due to the weather.

The Leeds Green Wave improved to 4-1 in area play with a 50-44 win over the Altamont Black Nights.

Midway through the first quarter the Green Wave found themselves up 8-2.  Two three point baskets from Mark Buckner and a two-point bucket from Carlos Strickland made up the eight points. Buckner later added a three-point play to give Leeds an 11-7 advantage after one quarter of play.

The Knights started the second quarter with a 6-1 run to take their first lead of the half 13 - 12.  Altamont built their lead up to as much as six points, 18-12. Trailing 21-18, the Green Wave's Deantrice Thomas drove to the basket, scored, and drew a foul. After converting the free throw the game was tied at 21. Carlos Strickland was fouled on a three-point attempt and was able to convert all three free throws, increasing the lead to 24-21 at halftime. Buckner led the scoring with nine first half points and Strickland followed with 6 points.

Buckets in the paint from Tyric Reeves and Ronnie Shepperd put Leeds up 28-21 to start the third, forcing an Altamont timeout. Each team only scored eight points each the rest of the quarter, with Brandon Woods scoring the last four Green Wave points. Leeds led 36-29 after three quarters.

Altamont would not go quietly as they started the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 38. Later in the quarter Leeds went on a 7-2 run to retake control of the game, 45-40. Leeds went on to win 50-44.
