EDITORIAL: Another great day for MLK Unity Committee
LEEDS — Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a special day for many who live in the local area. For 11 years, people from all walks of life join together to celebrate the journey we have all taken along the path to a better appreciation of our neighbors, regardless of their ethnic heritage and background.
This event is truly inspiring and reminds us of the successes our society has made in race relations. Undoubtedly, we still have work to do in forging the road to complete inclusion and living together in true unity. But, make no mistake, we have come a long way over the last half-century.
Planning an event of this magnitude and importance is a heavy burden and as a community we should all be grateful to the members of the MLK Unity Breakfast Committee. Kathy Dozier, Sophia Glenn, Charcey Glenn, Sandra McCain, Leila Pickett, Devoris Ragland, Sabrina Rose, John Saddler, and Kenneth Washington serve as the backbone of the event as the members of the committee. Congratulations to each of these individuals for coming together as a team for the sake of our community.
We also thank Shelley Stewart, the guest speaker at the event. His words echoed the pains of the past while maintaining a sense of hope for our future.
Another group that deserves praise is the Leeds Unity Community Choir. Even the familiar engines of the fastest racecars that are typical of Barber Motorsports Park cannot compare to the roaring, soaring sounds of this gifted ensemble.
To everyone who made the 2010 Unity Breakfast a memorable event – from the sponsors to emcee Rodney Garner, from the pastors who prayed for our community to the Leeds Unity Dance Ministry – we thank you for giving us an opportunity to share this time in true unity.
