LEEDS —
Garland Ray Minor, 69, of Odenville, and formerly of Leeds, died July 20, 2010.
Mr. Minor was a graduate of Leeds High School and an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War era. He supported the Gemini and Apollo space programs aboard the tracking ship USNS Rose Knot. He also worked in research and development at the Goddard Space Flight Center on such projects as the OAO (Orbiting Astrophysical Observatory) satellite system and the development stages of what is now known as the GPS navigational system. He spent many years as a field service engineer for RCA and served as a volunteer firefighter-medic for the Leeds and Moody Fire Departments and was one of the founders of providing EMS service through the Moody Fire Department. He was a life member of the National Geographic Society, and the Birmingham Aero Modelers Association, a Benefactor member of the National Rifle Association, and was also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and served on the board of directors of the John W. Inzer Museum.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Huley and Mildred Minor.
Burial was in the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo with Kilgroe Funeral Home directing.
