Meth lab found during the execution of a search warrant in the 6500 block of Lynn Avenue
The Leeds Police Department shut down a methamphetamine lab during the execution of a search warrant in the 6500 block of Lynn Avenue in Leeds on Wednesday, December 16.
Leeds Police officers working in conjunction with Pell City police officers executed the search warrant. Leeds Police Chief Ted Cook said the search warrant was the culmination of a month long investigation into the activities of Joseph Weems, a resident of the location.
The Pell City police arrested Weems on December 14 for several drug possession related charges and eluding police according to Cook. Information obtained by PCPD Narcotics Investigator Franklin Green, combined with information developed by the Leeds Police Department Narcotics/Street Crimes Unit led to obtaining the search warrant for the Leeds home.
Cook said that during the execution of the search warrant, officers from Leeds and Pell City discovered a fully functional methamphetamine “cooking” lab. Also discovered during the search were a stolen pistol, crystal methamphetamine, pseudo-ephedrine, various drugs paraphernalia items and other items associated with meth use and “cooking.”
“The suspect had gone to great lengths to hide the “shake and bake” style lab in the basement of the residence,” Cook said.
Charges from the search warrant are pending as the investigation continues. Weems faces possible charges of Unlawful Manufacture of Controlled Substance 1st degree, Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and Felon in Possession of Firearm.
Weems is currently in the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office Jail-Pell City.
As a result of information developed during this investigation, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were able to arrest three associates of Weems, two on drug charges and another on burglary charges.
