The Leeds Arts Council’s 2009 Tablescapes met with rave reviews as more than 100 patrons attended the opening gala and workshops. Table themes included A Vintage Dream, Simple Elegance, An Earthy Fare, Franciscan Country, a Tuscany Holiday, a Modern Holiday, French Country Affair, Pretty in Pink, Purple Parade, A Royal Holiday, Silver Splendor, Lunch on the Mesa, A Metropolitan Christmas, Children’s Tea Party, Baby’s First Christmas and A Buckaroo Birthday.
An ambiance with emotional appeal was set by the incredible pianist, David Brasher, which drew groups to the piano who joined their voices together to herald in the holiday season. Patrons enjoyed delectable hors d’oeuvres from Top Notch Catering, Higher Ground Roasters and Chick-Fil-A.
The tables were adorned with a variety of centerpiece strategies that seemed to be accomplished through the magical touches of designers such as Karen Carroll, Michael Dyer, Joy Roberts, Laura Barnes, Sharon Kay, Sunny Campbell, Patricia Noell, Mary Kinkead, Beverly Messer, Tena Payne and Jo Ann Malone.
Though each designer showed humility suggesting anyone could accomplish a beautiful setting, be assured there was a lot more to it than whipping out grandma’s white linens and throwing some dishes on a table.
Trends included layers of linens in metallic colors paired with neutrals, vivid reds and even burlap. Many tables were topped with one to three runners (long strips of material intersecting in the center of the round tables).
Like painting or sculpture, tablescape artists built their masterpieces upon diamond shaped crystals, feathers, ceramic figurines, candles, grapevines, decorative chargers, antique dishes, sparkling ornaments and whimsical collectables.
Some centerpieces stood as high as five feet in the air and great detail was given to color, texture, scale and fabric. The outcome was astounding and the “oohs” and “aahs” echoed throughout the event.
Many patrons commented on their desire to participate in next year’s event. Leave it to the Leeds Arts Council to continue bringing the arts to us in fresh innovative ways.
