Moody Junior High Basketball Roundup

Moody played at home on Thursday against Duran (Pell City).  The girls had a very exciting game.  Moody took a 8-6 lead after one period of play.  Duran’s defense stepped up and won the second period 11-2 to take a 17-10 lead into halftime.  Moody charged out in the third period and won the scoring battle 12-8.  The score going into the fourth period was 25-22 in favor of Duran.  This set up a exciting fourth period.  Moody, led by Alexus Moore’s 10 fourth period points, took the fourth period 17-13.  Duran had a chance with 3 seconds left and trailing by 3 points got the pass inbound and quickly passed it up the court to another Duran player that was left open around the three point line.  The Duran player shot the ball and hit the shot, one referee said it was a three pointer and was overturned by the other referee that had a better sight of the players foot placement.  The shot was ruled a two point basket and the Blue Devils scraped out the one point win at home.  “ I will take ugly win over a pretty loss any day.  Early in the game we had many shots that just rolled around the rim and came out.  We also did not do well from the line only hitting 6 out of 30 free throws.  It really is feast or famine with us sometimes.  I was really pleased at how hard we fought back, we shot ourselves in the foot so many times during the game but we had some girls step up their game and hit some big shots.  Alexis Moore really stepped up today.  She shot the ball well in the fourth period.”  Leading the way for the Devils were:  Alexus Martin with 14 points, Alexis Moore with 12 points, Micaela Robinson with 4 points, Chelsea Goodwin with 4 points, and Payton Swisher with 2 points.  Chelsea Goodwin did a great job of blocking shots.

In the boys game Moody faced a very tough challenge with an undefeated Duran team.  Moody was not to be intimidated by their opponents record as the Blue Devils jumped on the visitors 16-9 in the first period.  The teams practically traded baskets the second period with Moody scoring two more points than Duran.  The Blue Devils took a 34-25 lead into halftime.  The third period belonged to Moody also as they outscored Duran 18-12 to take a 52-37 lead.  Moody then added 14 points to Duran’s 18 points in the fourth period to take 66-55 win.  Moody now has a 9-1 record on the year.  Leading the way for the Devils were:  Dee Williams with 29 points, Josh Morgan with 10 points, Andrew Murray with 10 points, Issac Vacheresse with 8 points, Michael Barron with 8 points, and Myles Webster with 1 point.

On Friday Moody traveled to take on Ragland. The last time these teams met Ragland beat Moody 43-18 but this time it would be a different story. Moody took the first period 4-2 and Ragland took the second period 3-2. Moody took a 6-5 lead into the locker room at the half. Ragland came out in the third period and took it 10-8 to have a 15-14 lead. Moody jumped on the Purple Devils in the fourth period and took the period by a score of 14-3. Moody got the huge win with a score of 26-18. Ragland’s K. Echols, which had 25 points the first time the teams played, finished the game with 3 points. “This was a huge boost to our girls, we had a plan for their scorer and it worked tonight. We are really excited about this win because we believe that Ragland has the best team in the county right now. My girls found out tonight that if we play our game we can play with anyone in the county”. The win gives Moody a 7-7 record and this was the third win in a row for the Lady Devils. Leading the way for Moody was; Chelsea Goodwin with 8 points, Alexus Martin with 6 points, Jordan Woody with 4 points, Micaela Robinson with 4 points, Alexis Moore with 4 points, and Sarah Crutchfield with 2 points. Jordan Woody, Sarah Crutchfield, and Micaela Robinson did good defensively. Chelsea Goodwin did a good job of blocking shots and Alexus Martin did a good job of rebounding.

With a 28-15 lead going into the fourth period Moody turned it up to put the game away. Moody scored 21 points to Ragland’s 8 in the period. Moody won the game by a score of 49-23. “After expending so much energy the night before against an undefeated Duran team I was worried about how we would play. We did well in the first period but the let down came in the second period with mental mistakes, luckily we played like we are used to playing in the final two periods.” The win gives Moody a 10-1 record. Moody didn’t do much in the third period scoring only 4 points but when you hold your opponents to zero points you do not have to do much. Moody won the third period 4-0 and the fourth period 5-0. “I was proud of the way the girls played tonight, we did not allow a single point in the second half. I don’t think I have had a team do that before.” The win gives the Lady Devils 5 wins in a row and a 9-7 record overall.
