I-20 blasting to continue tonight

Blasting continues on Interstate 20 as part of the Alabama Department of Transportation’s project to widen the last four-lane segment of the roadway in St. Clair County.

Weather permitting, blasting will occur between 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, December 1. State troopers will provide rolling road blocks that will slow traffic for about 20 minutes while the blast is detonated and cleaned up, according to ALDOT and contractor time estimates. State troopers will slow I-20 traffic in both directions between the Brompton Exit (exit 147) and the Cook Springs Exit (exit 152).

Additional nighttime blasting will occur several nights per week for approximately the next six months. Motorists should expect slower traffic and minor delays.

A reduced speed limit of 45 mph is in effect throughout the work zone. Motorists may want to consider using alternate routes and adjusting arrival/departure times. Motorists should observe work-zone speed limits and other work-zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. State troopers will control traffic and strictly enforce speed limits.

This work is part of the ALDOT’s Progress 20 project to widen the last four-lane segment of I-20 in St. Clair County. The blasting is scheduled at night when traffic volumes are typically lower to minimize the public impact. The scheduled completion date on the project is by Oct. 1, 2012.
