City employee dies on the job

LEEDS — A long-time Leeds city worker and friend to many passed away Tuesday while on the job that friends said he loved. Leroy Alexander, 70, collapsed while working at the end of Peach Street on Tuesday morning.

Mayor Eric Patterson said Alexander had been an integral part of the city for the past 26 years. 

“He told many people that he loved working for the city,” Patterson said.  “He always told us he might retire next year, but came back everyday ready to work. He was very dedicated and a very good worker. He will be missed greatly as a person and an employee.”

Patterson said Leroy had worked under him the past year and a half, but that he has known him and his wife for many years.  “He has a lot of friends and was a great friend to us all,” he said.

Alexander was survived by his wife of 51 years, Louise, and daughters Gwen Franklin (Jeff), Tracy Chew (Grayson), sister, Estelle Brasher, brothers, David Alexander, Edward Alexander, J.C. Alexander, grandchildren, Olivia Chew and Grayson Chew IV.

Kilgroe Funeral Home in Leeds will be directing services. The family will receive friends at 4 p.m. today, Feburary 25, at Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held on Friday, Feburary 26 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church with burial at Dunnavant Community Cemetery.

The cause of death has not been determined, but is expected to of natural causes.
