LEEDS —
The Leeds Middle School has a new Family and Consumer Science Class. Classes for the 12 students are held in an attractive classroom that has four complete kitchens. However, these kitchens need many things to be fully functional.
Members of the Woman’s Literary Club saw the article in the Leeds News a few weeks ago about the instructor Mrs. Mercer accepting donations for the kitchens from a local thrift store. They decided to help. The week school started, club members donated 28 new kitchen items. Much to Mrs. Mercer’s surprise, the club recently donated four complete sets of new cookware. Included with each set was 5 glass bowls, cooking utensils and a covered lasagna pan.
The Woman’s Literary Club is the city’s oldest women’s service club. Although the club only meets September through May, the membership of fewer than 20 women work year round to support community projects. Helping meet educational needs in Leeds schools has long been a priority with the club.
Mrs. Mercer and Mr. Turner both expressed gratitude to the club women who have been so helpful. Because this is the first year, Mrs. Mercer is starting from scratch and still needs a number of things. Equipping four kitchens requires a great deal of time and effort as well as support from a generous community. Some of the things still needed include aprons, paper towels, flatware, glass measuring cups, colanders, basic spices, basic staple foods such as sugar, flour, pasta, etc. Wal-Mart gift cards in any domination would be greatly appreciated.
