LEEDS — The Cahaba Valley garden Club met January 25, 2010 at the home of Mari Hodge. President Nelda Faulkner welcomed everyone to the new year. Devotional was given by Patricia Noell. A selection, “Trading Places”, was read by Dr. David Jeremiah. His advice was to worship, receive God’s love and pursue paradise. The minutes from the December meeting was read an approved. The treasury report was also given.
President, Faulkner gave horticulture tips, cleaning of garden tools, transplanting shrubs and cleaning debris from your yard. Alabama Bid Count dates will be in February. Also the Camellia Show will be at Birmingham Botanical Gardens on February 12th,13th, and14th.
Guest speaker, Judy Mize, gave an interesting program on “Organic Gardening.” Many problems have been recognized in the use of chemicals in garden and plants. Those that have been identified are attention deficit, Autism in children and pollution. It was explained that we should go back to natural ways of controlling insects. An ordinary outdoor compost would be to use worms, newspapers, leaves and fruit peels.
Since chemicals have been used since the 1920’s. immunities have developed and are no longer effective. You also ingest chemicals from fresh fruits and vegetables when you wash you wash them in tap water.
The Ways and Means gift, furnished by Gale Atkinson, a lovely body lotion, handsoap and towel was won by guest Judy Mize.
Delicious refreshments of chicken salad, pimento cheese sandwiches, crackers, dip, fruit cake cookies, chocolate chip cookies, Baklava, fresh vegetable tray, chips, fresh apple-nut cake, sprite, coke and coffee.
