Meet Your Neighbor – Denise Miller

Leeds Middle School receptionist Denise Miller said she is happy to call Leeds home.

Miller grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, but made her way to the Leeds area by way of her husband of 17 years, Charles. Charles served in the navy for over ten years and Denise said he would bring their family to the area to visit relatives. “I have always liked it here,” she said. “I like the peaceful living and friendly people. The neighbors have always spoke and waved to us as we pass by.” Denise added moving to Leeds was the best thing they did for the family. “Now, I’m a neighbor who is waving at everyone,” she said.

Denise graduated from Trezevant High School in Memphis in 1980. She attended Tennessee State University in Nashville with the intention of getting a degree in Criminal Justice, but said her mother became sick with cancer and passed away so she was never able to complete her dream. She said she would like to go back to college one day and finish her studies. Her goal is to become an attorney.

The Millers have three children including Crystal, Brittany and Charles III. Her son is in the 11th grade at Leeds High School and her two girls have already finished. Crystal graduated from Ensley High School and Brittany graduated from LHS.

Denise said the best part of being the receptionist at LMS is watching the students grow from sixth grade students on to eighth graders. “Not only do I get to the chance to see the students smiling faces, but I keep a close track of their attendance,” she said.

Her hobbies outside of the school include reading and traveling, but she admits she is an avid Leeds High School football supporter.

“I enjoy watching the Leeds High School football team play,” she said.

Denise said if she had to pick a hero in her life it would definitely be her mother. “My father died before I was born,” she said. “I watched my mother be a mother and a father to my brother and I. She always worked two jobs so we had not only our needs, but also some our wants.”

Denise said she lives by a quote her mother always told her growing up – “You will never know what you can do unless you try to do it, never give up.”
