Meet Your Neighbor – Christy McGehee
Leeds High School students and parents are bound to recognize Christy McGehee’s smiling face. She’s been with the program as Principal Andrew Briskey’s secretary and the school’s bookkeeper for going on two years.
Before making the move she filled the same position at Leeds Middle School making this her fifth year with the Leeds City Schools system. “I love it here,” she said.
“Mr. Briskey is a joy to work for and we work real well together. He really loves these kids at Leeds and he wants the very best for them.” Coworkers said Christy is a great fit at Leeds High School. She jumps right in and works well with the Leeds High School staff.
Christy hails from Tarrant, where she attended Tarrant High School, but has lived in Leeds since for the past 14 years. “Leeds is a very tight-knit, family-type community,” she said. “A large majority of the community are very involved in the school, which we really appreciate.”
Christy worked at Bellsouth for many years and then went on to work at Southern Natural Gas, but when she had her first baby, Wes, now 10, she decided to take a little time off to spend with her growing family. She also has a little girl, Wendy, who is a year and a half years old.
Christy is married to the love of her life, Stacy McGehee, a math teacher and basketball coach at Jemison High School. They have been married for 17 years and Christy believes he “can do just about anything and has the patience of Job.”
When she is not filling the role of a career woman, a mother and a wife, she enjoys attending sporting events with her son and husband. She also enjoys cooking and arts and crafts. She has plans of, one day, returning to UAB, the university she attended before she started her family. She said she would like to pursue a degree in business and accounting, but said she is going to wait until her daughter gets a little older.
The family is also active at the Ashville Road Church of Christ where they enjoy a number of activities.
Christy lives her life by a verse in Proverbs Chapter 3, Verse 5 and 6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your path.”
Christy celebrated her birthday this Wednesday. Principal Briskey said she was turning 21, but Christy joked, “well actually 25.”
