LEEDS —
While state officials in Montgomery wrangled with budgeting issues that would impact school system’s across the state, there has been some good news a bit closer to home.
The Leeds Board of Education was told during a meeting Wednesday that the loss of state funds could be made up with an increase in anticipated local funds. While the numbers are only projections, it does give the system hope that it will not have to make budget cuts.
“We are fortunate to see an increase in local revenue, especially considering our state funding is down,” said Harry Higdon, financial officer for the Leeds Board of Education.
State funding for 2010 will likely be cut by over $400,000. Meanwhile, local sources of funding could be up as much as $345,000.
Total anticipated revenue for the system is $10.3 million.
Other items discussed at the meeting included:
• approving contracts associated with the care of special needs students;
• discussed capital project funding and debt service associated with the elementary school expansion project and middle school ditch project;
• approved personnel agenda; and
• agreed to move the next board meeting to July 20, 6 p.m. at the Leeds Middle School cafeteria.
