Local dentist practice celebrates 35 years in Leeds

LEEDS — Youth inspires lofty dreams and ambitions. When a younger Dr. James W. Stone II graduated from UAB School of Dentistry, he had plans for his career.

“I knew I wanted a dental practice. I had no idea it would turn out to be such a wonderful thing,” said Stone. “It isn’t really like work at all.”

His parents had moved their home to Leeds and Dr. Stone decided to try out a practice in their hometown. His office, near Parker Drugs on Highway 78 opened in June of 1975.  A family station wagon listed for under $1,500,  Moody was seeking a contractor to build a high school and the PTA of Leeds High had put air conditioners in each classroom with $10,000 from fundraisers. Times change but people often stay the same within a community.

“Leeds opened its arms to me that year,” said Stone. “I was looking back at some of my old charge sheets. I remember how proud I was to be earning that money.”

Stone picked up an article from his desk that ran in The Leeds News in July of 1975 and smiled.

“The charges were different then and that young man didn’t have all this gray hair,” he said.

Stone’s practice was a family affair. His mother Emma worked as his office manager until the 1990’s. His father helped him to build the office his practice currently occupies on Sixth Street.

“My first patient was an 8-year-old boy,” Stone said smiling. “I am now providing care to three generations of some families. Leeds has been more than good to me. I just hope I’ve given back a little.”

Some of Stone’s patients are also long time employees.

“I came to a dental appointment and heard there was an opening. I applied that day and the rest is history,” said Jeanie Coupland. “I love working here.”

Several of Stone’s staff members have been with the doctor for 15 to 20 years. The office is almost a family unit itself.

“The prices and events around Leeds have changed a great deal but the kindness, generosity and loyalty of people here hasn’t changed,” said Stone.”I never wanted to be anywhere else. Sometimes you find your calling as you go along. I have.”

In honor of the 35 years of his practice in Leeds, Dr. Stone’s staff planned a surprise. The office staff was determined to mark the event without Stone’s knowledge. On Thursday, July 1, the staff cleared Stone’s schedule from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and ordered a feast. Family and friends were let in on the secret and the office was filled with laughter, the smell of barbecue and memories.

“They got me this time,” said Stone. “This office couldn’t operate without these ladies. I’m just a cog in this wheel. My patients, my staff, my family and friends all make it possible for me to do this. I couldn’t make it work any other way.”

The celebration included office staff families, Stone’s wife and his family as well. Stone’s service to Leeds citizens continues. The practice is located at 1209 Sixth Street.
